Lithuania’s European Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius on Sunday announced his decision to leave the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union.
“I have made a long-brewing decision to terminate my LFGU membership,” the politician posted on Facebook. Up until now, his LFGU membership has been suspended until he works at the European Commission. Sinkevicius joined the LFGU in 2017, a year after the general election. He later served as the economy and innovation minister. Despite that, he says, the LFGU is “putting in the bin” the accumulated experience. “The party no longer needs people who, with their hard work, have built public capital for it. The party no longer needs discussions on its future. The party no longer wants to accept responsibility. The party is getting more radical and pits people,” he said. Speaking with BNS on Sunday, LFGU leader Ramunas Karbauskis said he was not surprised with Sinkevicius’ decision.
“Nobody is surprised with such a decision. I learnt from you but it’s not surprising. Sinkevicius and the LFGU’s values are very different things,” he said, adding that Sinkevicius is among the people who “have tried to destabilize the situation and values within the party”. He also rejects criticism over the party getting more radical. Some former LFGU members are now joining a new party being established by ex-Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis. Sinkevicius told BNS he was not yet planning to join the new party.
