Latvian charity organisation receives angry calls from residents for its support of Ukraine

Latvian Ziedot.lv charity organisation frequently receives verbal attacks from angry Latvian residents for the organisations work in Ukraine, said the manager of Ziedot.lv Rūta Dimanta in an interview to LTV Rīta panorāma.

As for the level of cohesion within Latvia’s society in the context of the war in Ukraine, Dimanta stressed that people’s cohesion become visible at the very least in the fact that some residents have opened their wallets to donate money to people they never met in Ukraine. The full amount of donations collected so far exceeds EUR 7 million.

At the same time, Ziedot.lv frequently receives verbal attacks on the phone in regards to what the organisation does to support Ukraine.

«People call and use curse words at us. They send us where the Russian warship was sent. Posters set up outside are vandalized with «Z» letters and otherwise damaged. All this is unpleasant,» said Dimante, adding that this means the state administration and politicians have to think about Latvia’s domestic security.

Upon receiving threats and other insults, Ziedot.lv informs the police about them, with telephone numbers and e-mails of those people, even though in most cases those people remain anonymous.

Dimanta believes Latvia should consider discussing not only ways of helping Ukraine, but also how people in Latvia will live in a post-war situation. This is important also because Latvia will have many refugees that may face social problems, because due to different reasons whey may not find well-paid jobs. She believes the moment Latvian residents feel prices have gone up to the point they cannot support themselves, compassion towards other people will be pushed to the background, and then Latvia will have to deal with internal problems.
