Lithuania eases hiring requirements for foreign nationals

Asylum seekers and foreigners who have arrived in the country illegally will from now on be granted access to employment or self-employment after the expiry of 12 months since the date of their registration in the information system of the Lithuanian Migration Department. These individuals will be obliged to obtain a respective permission from the Employment Service. Foreign nationals who have completed studies in Lithuania will be able to apply for a temporary residence permit in Lithuania within a period of 10 years from the completion of their studies, instead of a two-year period, as was the case until now. If a foreigner has been granted temporary protection, he or she will not be required to obtain the Employment Service’s decision regarding compliance with labor market needs.

Ukrainian citizens, their family members and stateless persons who resided in Ukraine but fled the country due to Russia’s hostilities will not be required to obtain the Employment Service’s decision regarding compliance with labor market needs. This concession will only be applicable in cases where a foreign national applies for a residence permit for work. Foreign nationals will only be able to apply for a work visa at a Lithuanian diplomatic mission abroad. Applications for a residence permit for work will have to be filed in Lithuania, same as previously.
