Support for developing more wind power projects on land is increasing after several years of decline. There are now more people in favor of more wind power than there are against it.
Fresh figures from the Cicero Center for Climate Research show that 39% of Norwegian respondents now support more wind power on land, while 34% are against it, Teknisk Ukeblad writes. Just a year ago, only 33% wanted to develop more wind power on land.
The share of those who “completely disagree” that more wind power should be developed on land has fallen from 24 to 20%.
“There is a significant change in public opinion. For the first time in several years, we are seeing increasing support for wind power, while at the same time, the proportion of those against it is falling,” researcher Marianne Aasen at Cicero pointed out.
Support for onshore wind power is particularly strong among young people, those under 30. A total of 40% of respondents in this age group are supportive of more onshore wind power, while 27% are against it.
Deputy head Pernille Bonnevie Hansen of the Norwegian Society for the Conservation of Nature (Naturvernforbundet) understands that people now want more wind power.
“It is no wonder that many want more power in a situation with high electricity prices. What we are concerned about, and see, is that there is pressure to build out both wind power and hydropower in vulnerable natural areas,” she noted.
