A Finnish volunteer fighter has died in combat in eastern Ukraine, according to a post on Instagram by an organization called Your Finnish Friends, which assists volunteers in the country.
“‘Sipa‘ gave up all his possessions to go to Ukraine to defend peace, despite his mother’s strong opposition. Sipa had a goal, and he never gave up on his goal,” the post said.
The organization said that he had served as a medic in the 1st Infantry Team of the International Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The latest death brings to six the number of Finnish volunteers known to have died while fighting in Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The last report of a Finnish fatality came in August, when Finnish mental health association Sodan kokeneet confirmed that 26-year-old Ville Mykkänen had died in the Luhansk area of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas during an offensive by Russian forces.
According to Jussi Tanner of the Finnish Foreign Ministry, there are an estimated 20-30 Finnish volunteers fighting in Ukraine.
