Helsinki is one of the greatest places in the world, according to Time magazine’s 2021 list. The capital of Finland was hailed as one of 100 extraordinary destinations to explore as a city that is becoming “a burgeoning art hot spot.”
This is Time’s third annual greatest places list. The list includes countries, regions, cities and municipalities.
Time particularly commends Helsinki’s innovative architecture, with many old buildings being given a new life round the city. One example mentioned by the magazine is the Helsinki Biennial, an international art event being hosted at the former army base on the island of Vallisaari.
The recently-opened Scandic Grand Central hotel, which is housed at the Art Nouveau building of Helsinki’s Central Station, also received an honorary mention.
“Ingenuity, creativity, revitalization and reopenings” provided the guiding light for this year’s choices, as the exceptional pandemic circumstances have reshuffled the world’s values. Time says this year’s list is a tribute “to the people and businesses at the forefront of those industries who, amid extraordinary circumstances, found ways to adapt, build and innovate.”
