The Lithuanian Migration Department expects to process all asylum applications from migrants who have entered the country from Belarus so far within three months, the authority’s director said on Tuesday.
“Over 200 asylum applications have been processed to date, and we are planning to process all applications that have been already registered and are still being registered within three months,” Evelina Gudzinskaite told LRT Radio. “But everything depends on the complexity of the cases: if the cases are as they have been so far, […] the pace will be fast enough, but if we find more complex cases where we need to go deeper, it may take a while,” she added. Over 4,100 migrants have crossed into Lithuania from Belarus illegally so far this year, but the flow has decreased considerably after border guards were allowed to push them back to the neighboring country. Lithuania has declared a state-level extreme situation over the unprecedented migration influx which it says is being orchestrated by the Belarusian regime.
