Finland’s unemployment rate stood at 7.7 percent last month.
The number of people out of work in Finland increased by over 30,000 last month compared to February 2023, according to figures released on Tuesday by both Statistics Finland and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
The ministry’s report put the country’s unemployment figure at 289,700 people, an increase of 31,600 people compared to February last year.
Statistics Finland meanwhile reported a lower jobless number, 220,000, but noted that their figures represented a bigger increase in job losses — at 34,000 — compared to February 2023.
The two organisations define and collect unemployment data differently, resulting in discrepancies between their monthly figures. The ministry’s numbers come from client registers of TE employment offices and municipalities, while Statistics Finland carries out sample surveys.
Statistic Finland’s figures are the internationally comparable data set, and are therefore considered the official Finnish unemployment statistic.
Based on those figures, Finland’s unemployment rate stood at 7.7 percent in February.
Less jobs available
In a press statement, the ministry noted that there were a total of 151,400 job vacancies in Finland last month, a decline of some 46,900 positions compared to February last year.
The number of people considered to be long-term unemployed also increased, the ministry stated, with the figure climbing by 7,000 to 92,200.
