Latvian female tennis players Alyona Ostapenko and Anastasija Sevastova could not pass the first stage of the tournament of the Olympics and later lost doubles as well. This means their participation in the Olympics is over.
Ostapenko and Sevastova failed to pass the first stage of doubles at the Tokyo Olympic games. Latvian team lost to Australia’s team with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 10:5.
Ostapenko lost to Russian Olympic Committee tennis player Elena Vesnina with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7:2), 4-6. Sevastova lost to French player Fiona Ferro with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 2-6.
Ostapenko ranks 30th and Vesnina is 305th. Sevastova is 53rd in the WTA ranking system and Ferro is 11 positions lower.
Sevastova was the first to hit the court. She started with six unused breakballs, but at the next opponent she she scored a one-point lead. While in the fifth game Ferro prevented her opponent from breaking her serve, Latvia’s representative managed to do this in the seventh: 5-2. Sevastova won the set and scored 6-2. She started the second set confidently as well, taking her opponent’s serve with 3-0.
Ferro managed to overtake the game, taking away two next serves from Sevastova, equalizing the score. In the tenth game Sevastova lost to her opponent with a score of 4-6. In the end, Ferro won with a score of 6-2.
Ostapenko and Vesnina started off their game. By the fifth game Ostapenko broke her opponent’s serve. At the end of the set, Ostapenko had lost two of her serves and lost to her Russian opponent 6-4. Tossing the racked on the ground did not help vent emotions.
Ostapenko had trouble with her serve in the second set.
Fighting both the heat and emotions, Ostapenko attacked with strong hits that compensated her earlier mistakes.
The second set passed without breaks. The winner was determined in a tie-break. In it, Ostapenko took her opponent’s serve three times and took the lead (7:2).
The third set ended up with tie of 2-2. In the end, Ostapenko lost her serve, opening an opportunity for Vesnina. Vesnina scored 40:0 and got three match balls. Ostapenko played back two of them, but was put into out with the third.
A total of 64 female tennis players are taking part in the single-game tournament. Seven victories are needed to win a title.
