Thunder damage on electric appliances, storm damage on house roofs and melted power banks – all this and many more accidents has this summer’s weather brought in Estonia and has been covered by insurance companies.
Insurance company If Kindlustus has Triinu Pärn as it senior manager of property insurance. «A trend can be noticed this year that, even while the number of storms is similar, the number of households affected and the amount of claims paid out has risen,» Pärn commented on the trend of the summer of 2021.
More specifically, Swedbank’s head of risk insurance Liina Laks noted to ERR: «Heat is often accompanied by thunder, strong winds and rain. Thunder has caused damage to home items such as set-top boxes, TVs and other appliances.»
Direct sunlight in combination with heat can make unexpected objects go bad. «A motorcycle bag, toiletries, tennis kit, an electronic toothbrush and a battery bank have all ‘melted’, directly due to the heat,» Laks from Swedbank informed. In traffic, the hot weather makes people less attentive, which in Estonia this summer has caused more accidents on roads, with bicycles and scooters in particular, ERR reports citing insurers.
