Stubb says Trump serious about Ukraine peace

Incoming US president Donald Trump wants to end the war in Ukraine soon, possibly even before stepping into office, Alexander Stubb said in an interview with the Bloomberg news agency.

“I think his [Trump’s] agenda is quite clear. He talks about ending the war in Ukraine.”

According to Stubb, Trump’s election victory has shifted the foreign policy attitude of the United States.

“I think we in Europe and the rest of the world need to understand that Trump is very serious about getting a peace deal sooner rather than later,” he told Bloomberg.

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Stubb added that he saw the time leading up to 20 January as crucial. “I have said that there’s a window of opportunity for these negotiations between the election and inauguration day.”

Stubb on Monday said that he had spoken with Trump on the phone to congratulate him, noting after the call that “relations between Finland and the US are very close.”
