In Latvia, from the next school year, the lowest rate of the monthly salary for general education teachers will be raised to 830 euros and for pre-school teachers to 872 euros, the Latvian government has decided.
On Tuesday, July 6, the Latvian Cabinet of Ministers adopted the proposal to raise from September the rate of the lowest monthly salary for general education teachers from 790 to 830 euros, which will be a 5.1% increase. For teachers of pre-school education institutions, the lowest rate of the monthly salary will be raised by 10.4% from 790 to 872 euros.
In autumn, the lowest rates of monthly salaries will also be raised to the heads of vocational education institutions, the heads of general education and interest education institutions, the heads of college branches, where vocational, general education programmes are taught, as well as that of educationists.
According to the Latvian Ministry of Education and Research, the September pay rise will be the first step to gradually decrease inequality in salary between pre-school teachers and teachers of other levels and kinds of education. In addition, it is planned to close four lower secondary schools and one primary school in Latvia from September 2021.
